The Keramas: {Zamami Island}

So you know those places that are so breathtakingly beautiful they leave you in awe?  That’s exactly how I feel about the Keramas!  I have been dying to go back to the Keramas after visiting Tokashiki for my birthday two years ago.  The Keramas are a small group of islands located south of Okinawa.  Tokashiki and Zamami are the two main islands.  This was my third time planning a trip out to Zamami!  I had to cancel the last two trips so I guess third times the charm!

I have never seen islands more beautiful than the Keramas.  The great thing about these islands is that you can take a 1-2 hour ferry ride from the main island of Okinawa to get there.  Zamami is a very remote island so there aren’t any fancy hotels.  We stayed at the Kerama Beach Hotel which was more like a hotel from the 70s.  You can also camp on Zamami.  The campground is beautiful and right on the beach!

You would not believe how clear the turquoise water is!  We spent hours just snorkeling and watching the beautiful fish! There are two main beaches on Zamami.  Furuzamami Beach and Ama Beach!  Ama Beach is also known as sea turtle beach.  At high tide the sea turtles will come in near the beach.  Swimming with sea turtles has been on my bucket list for awhile, and I finally got to do it.  It was the most amazing experience just watching and following the sea turtles as they swam through the turquoise water.

Zamami Village was also so much fun to explore.  The small fishing town is made up of small roads that lead to little cafes and shops.  A local Japanese man recommended a small cafe called The Little Kitchen.  We decided to try it for lunch and it was SO good.  Trying new cafes in Okinawa is definitely one of my most favorite things to do!

And finally…the sunsets!!  I have never seen such a beautiful sunset.  The sweet Japanese ladies at our hotel told us where the best place to watch the sunset is on the island.  So we rented a car from the hotel and drove up to the beach.  There were huge rock formations that you can sit up on and watch the sun sink into the ocean.  It was the most spectacular sunset ever!

If you ever have the chance to visit Zamami Island you need to go!  It was an absolutely magical place!
