Last weekend we decided to visit Tsuken Island. It’s a small island off the coast of Okinawa that is known as the “island of carrots” because of the fields of carrots that are grown there every year. During the Battle of Okinawa, the island was used as a fortress to defend the main island of Okinawa. I have been wanting to visit this island for awhile because of the cute ferry boat that takes you over there and the beautiful beaches.
The island is so small that you can either walk or rent a bike to explore the island. It was such a beautiful Spring day to walk around the island and explore.
Tomai-hama Beach is absolutely beautiful with its crystal clear turquoise waters. The boys had the best day snorkeling and playing on the ocean playground.
The boys were so excited to find and climb up the giant “Tsuken Carrot”. For some reason the librarian in me kept thinking about one of my favorite children’s book Creepy Carrots. It is one of my boys’ favorite books.
After a beautiful day of exploring and relaxing on the beach, we headed back to the ferry to head home. We watched as they loaded the ferry with bags of carrots to sell in the Farmer’s Markets in Okinawa!
We had the most amazing day exploring Carrot Island! I hope that if you live in Okinawa you will take a day to explore this beautiful island with your family!
